Flood Pump System in Port of Spain Successful

RELEASE DATE: 11 Dec 2019

On Wednesday 11th December, 2019, Senator the Honourable Rohan Sinanan, Minister of Works and Transport and a technical team from the Ministry, visited the PoS pump site outside the PTSC terminal to see the pump in full operation. The new pump site has greatly aided in the alleviation of flooding outside City Gate, and in PoS in general. During the Media briefing Minister Sinanan said, the Government is working on a medium to long term plan which will see large automatic pumps like the one installed at South Quay, in other parts of the country. We are working with the Andean Development Bank to take all of our work plans such as the Oropouche Basin Study, the Nariva Study and the South Oropouche Study and create a work programme for us”. The Minister added, “some of the medium-term plans might be to open up new channels which could take two to three years to get done and then creating retention ponds take a little longer time but that doesn’t mean you can’t start work immediately”. Senator the Honourable Rohan Sinanan, Minister of the Works and Transport said since the pump’s installation in 2018 there has been no major flooding at City Gate.
