Coastal Protection Unit - Prefeasibility Assessment, Shoreline Stability Tobago

The Coastal Protection Unit (CPU) of the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure (MOWI) was recently invited by the Department of Infrastructure and Public Utilities (DIPU) of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) to conduct a prefeasibility assessment of the THA’s coastal protection management structures and of the stability of the Tobagonian coastline. The CPU was invited due to THA’s recognition of the devastating cases of shoreline erosion and inundation currently being experienced on the island and the need for developing targeted plans and administrative structure to address unstable areas of Tobago’s coastline.

This need is underscored by the fact that much of Tobago’s economic activities are based on coastal zone tourism which is being directly and negatively impacted by coastal instability. Given that MOWI has recently developed a critical shoreline stabilisation programme and a structure to administer t, the THA requested that a similar initiative be developed for Tobago.
