MEDIA RELEASE

THE MINISTRY OF WORKS AND TRANSPORT INVITES THE PUBLIC TO REPORT CASES OF COASTAL EROSION TO THE COASTAL PROTECTION UNIT

The Ministry of Works and Transport invites members of the public who may feel the impact of coastal erosion which may be exacerbated due to the recent rough seas bulletin issued by the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service, to make a report to the Coastal Protection Unit.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Meteorological Service is currently receiving reports that sea conditions around the islands are rough with wave heights ranging from 3.0 m to 3.5 m in open areas and 1.0 m in sheltered areas. These oceanic irregularities are attributed to strong winds in the lower atmosphere and the Numerical Weather Prediction has forecast that these rough conditions will continue over the next two to three days.

The CPU acknowledges that one of the biggest factors in coastal erosion is the strength of waves breaking along the coastline. The variable of strong winds therefore adds to the erosive capabilities of the waves during this period.

The Coastal Protection Unit urges sea bathers and the public at large to be vigilant and practice extreme caution as well as the necessary safety measures while visiting our beaches for the duration of the rough seas bulletin.

Share your videos of coastal erosion, coastal flooding and other occurrences observed around our coast with MOWT by emailing to coastal@mowt.gov.tt or communications@mowt.gov.tt and by contacting 623-6797.
