MINISTER OF WORKS AND TRANSPORT CALLS FOR GREATER CRACKDOWN ON FRAUDULENT PBR PASSES

Senator the Honourable Rohan Sinanan, Minister of Works and Transport has called on Maxi Taxi Operators working Route 2 along the Priority Bus Route (PBR) to assist police officers in the crackdown of persons using the PBR unlawfully or with fraudulent passes.

Minister Sinanan made the call as he addressed 15 Maxi Taxi operators on Tuesday 23rd January, 2018 following a rebate cheque distribution ceremony at the Ministry’s Head Office for persons who bought large Maxis in recent years. Minister Sinanan noted that a rebate now applies to persons who own CNG vehicles and encouraged owners to convert to take advantage of a rebate in the future.

“Maxi Taxi transportation is a key part of public transportation in Trinidad and Tobago. We know you have your challenges but you have been doing a fantastic job, and the government is there to support you,” he said.

Acting Superintendent Edwin Phillips of the Transit Police Branch also addressed the gathering and thanked Mr. Linus Philip, President of the Route 2 Maxi Taxi Association for bringing cases of suspected fake permits to the attention of the police. Noting that through various patrols, police officers have captured 12 stolen vehicles and ticketed over 2000 persons for unlawful use of the PBR, he underscored the need for Maxi Taxis to provide safe and secure transportation.

“We need to bring the Priority Bus Route to a safe level where commuters can board your Maxi Taxis and have that sense of safety and security, knowing that after a hard day’s work they will be heading home safely,” he said.
