Government Initiates Legal Proceedings Against Inter-Continental Shipping Limited Printable Version

23 Feb 2018

The Ministry of Works and Transport wishes to provide the general public with an update regarding legal proceedings between the State and Inter-Continental Shipping Limited the providers of the M.V. party agreement for the State’s continued lease of the M.V. Superfast Galicia, which was first chartered in 2015.

On April 21st, 2017, Inter-Continental Shipping Limited removed the M.V. Superfast Galicia from the sea bridge between Trinidad and Tobago after attempting to get the Government to enter into a five year agreement without competitive tender.

Accordingly, the Attorney General on 22nd February 2018 initiated legal proceedings on behalf of the State against Inter-Continental Shipping Limited for the purpose of recovering damages for breach of contract and the early departure of the M.V. Superfast Galicia.

As a measure of this commitment, the Government stands resolute in its quest to ensure that at no time our citizens would be held to ransom by any entity that has been entrusted with the responsibility of providing a service to the State.

We are confident that the justice system of Trinidad and Tobago continues to be robust and that this matter will be treated with objectively, to ensure that justice is delivered in accordance with the evidence presented.
