ONTO THE SHH AT MACAULAY

After formally opening the Calcutta Bridge, the Honourable Minister and the PURE Team made their way to Claxton Bay to commission the $6Million dollar acceleration and deceleration ramps and road improvement works that spans approximately 1530 metres. Minister Rambachan was elated that this project, which began in May 2014 and was managed by three young PURE Engineers, took only four (4) months to complete.

It is anticipated that since new traffic measures were implemented, some major benefits to residents and motorists will follow suit. These benefits include:

  • Adequate and easy access to and from the Macaulay Village.
  • New safety and traffic management devices will enhance the safety of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  • Travel time of road users and cost of vehicle maintenance will also be significantly reduced.

The Scope of Works for the Macaulay Road Upgrade Project entailed the construction of a Deceleration Lane into the Macaulay Village off the south bound lane of the Solomon Hochoy Highway (SHH). An Acceleration Lane off the Macaulay West Road onto the northbound lane of the Solomon Hochoy Highway was also constructed. Macaulay Trace to Macaulay Road East and Hermitage Road Intersection were also upgraded and rehabilitated, with the drainage network improved to prevent deterioration of the roadway and flooding of the Macaulay Village. Traffic management and safety improvements /devices were also implemented on the entire network.

In keeping with its mandate, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure upgrades these thoroughfares with the aim of ensuring the safety of pedestrians and motorists.
