The establishment of a Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) will contribute to:
- Safety of life at sea
- Safety and efficiency of navigation
- Protection of the marine environment, adjacent shore areas, work site and offshore installations from possible adverse effects of maritime traffic.
The industrial development of the Western coast of Trinidad, inclusive of existing oil and gas projects increases the potential for maritime risks. The risks associated with the shipping industry, give rise to the concerns that could compromise the safety of navigation, security and the protection of marine and human life. The purpose of the system will be to allow:
- Identification and monitoring of ships
- Provision of navigational information
- Coordination of pollution response location
- The provision of a coastal radio station
