The Ministry of Works and Transport, PURE Unit (MOWT, PURE) completed the Eastern Main Road, Sangre Grande Road Rehabilitation project in May 2019. The project is located in the north-eastern side of the country. The road is edged by government offices and tertiary level institutions and is a customary route used to arrive to common destinations such as Manzanilla, Mayaro, Rio Claro and Guayaguayare. Before construction, the Sangre Grande area had a history of drainage issues, low dilapidated sidewalks, as well as a decrepit roundabout with raised traffic separators, which impeded the manoeuvring of vehicles. In order to address these issues, the PURE Unit was assigned to rehabilitate the roadway and upgrade the general aesthetics of the town centre. As a result, the project comprised of road, concrete and drainage works designed to improve the existing roadway, increase the height of existing walkways and generally to enhance the aesthetics of the town. The Outcomes and Research Unit of MOWT, PURE conducted surveys and interviews to ascertain the overall outcome of the project with regard to the objectives.
The objectives of the Eastern Main Road Sangre Grande Road Rehabilitation project were:
- To rehabilitate the existing roadway.
- To increase the height of the existing sidewalks.
- To install slipper drains.
- To improve the aesthetics of the Sangre Grande town centre.
