Desilting, Widening and Embankment Formation Works at Salazar River, Guaico

The Ministry’s Drainage Division through its National Desilting Programme completed works on the Salazar River, Guaico.

Site Visit at Ongoing Retaining Wall Project at the St Joseph River

On Tuesday 4th May, 2021, Senator the Honourable Rohan Sinanan, Minister of Works and Transport, the Honourable Terrence Deyalsingh, Minister of Health/Member of Parliament for St Joseph, Mr. Navin Ramsingh, Chief Technical Officer and a technical team from the Ministry conducted a site visit of an ongoing drainage project at the St. Joseph River to assess the status of the project.

The Ministry of Works and Transport has continued to improve its operational strategy for the Drainage Division through the use of equipment to execute its mandate. The Water Master Amphibious Dredger is the newest piece of equipment to be procured by the Ministry, ahead of the rainy season, to complete its annual Drainage Desilting Programme.

Drainage Desilting Programme 2021

Mandillon River Project was undertaken by the Drainage Division's Central District as part of its 2021 Drainage Desilting projects. The project supports the Drainage Division's commitment to its mandate to develop and maintain main water courses and irrigation systems across Trinidad.

Scope of Works

The works entailed the desilting, clearing, cleaning & embankment Works of 2.4 km along the UBH Northbound to Hermitage Road (Union-Village Community Center), Claxton Bay.

Benefits of the Project

The Division has been actively engaged in desilting works to ensure that major water courses are cleared during the dry season to prevent excessive runoff or flooding.

The Amphibious Multipurpose Dredger

Let's Work Together to Prevent Flooding Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow! The Amphibious Dredger has been procured by the Ministry to execute its 2021 Drainage Desilting Programme, ahead of the rainy season. The key benefits of the dredger are as follows: It was procured to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of desilting works on land and water and facilitates a reduction of costs associated with contracting equipment from private contractors, on an annual basis. The key features are as follows:

It can move on dry land and into the water and return;
It has multiple attachments which perform tasks such as Excavation, Piling, Hammering, Raking and Clamshell operation;
It is self propelling in water;
It can operate from Sea into River or River into sea;
It possesses depth control monitoring; and
It can self load and unload This new piece of equipment is expected to provide two key benefits for the Ministry.
