As part of its ongoing rainy season preparedness programme, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, through its Drainage Division, continues to carry out critical desilting and watercourse maintenance works. This time, we are in East Trinidad, where our drainage works are helping to reduce flooding risks and improve drainage efficiency within surrounding communities. Interventions include the removal of accumulated silt, vegetation and debris, as well as channel clearing activities aimed at restoring the natural flow and carrying capacity of waterways ahead of periods of heavy rainfall.
Works are currently taking place along the following watercourses:
• Quare River
• Guaico River
• James Smart River
• Mandillon River Tributary
These flood mitigation works are expected to bring significant benefits to nearby communities such as, Valencia, Sangre Grande, Guaico, Oropouche, and Fishing Pond, by improving water flow, reducing the likelihood of river overtopping and minimising water accumulation in flood-prone areas during heavy rainfall events.
