As Trinidad and Tobago enters the 2026 rainy season, proactive flood mitigation and drainage maintenance remain critical to protecting communities, safeguarding infrastructure and reducing the impact of severe weather events. Ahead of periods of increased rainfall, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure’s Drainage Division has intensified its nationwide maintenance programme to ensure that major watercourses, rivers and drainage channels are functioning efficiently.
Works consist of:
- Desilting of watercourses
- Upgrade of pumps and gates
- Build out of drainage infrastructure
- Ongoing clearing of river mouths
Ongoing desilting works are taking place at several locations across the country, including the San Juan River, St. Joseph River, watercourses in Laventille and Beetham, the Bamboo Nos. 2 and 3 pumping stations, as well as areas in Penal and Siparia. The interventions include desilting, debris removal, channel clearing and general drainage maintenance aimed at improving water flow, increasing channel capacity and reducing the likelihood of flooding in vulnerable communities. These works are intended to benefit the surrounding areas by facilitating faster water run-off, reducing the risk of property damage and improving accessibility during heavy rainfall.
