Drain and Culvert Cleaning on the Beetham Highway (1)

As part of the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure’s 2026 Desilting and Flood Mitigation Programme, intensive cleaning operations are currently underway along the VMCOTT Main Drain and Culvert Crossings on the Beetham Highway. The works involve the removal of significant quantities of debris and illegally dumped waste that have accumulated within the drainage infrastructure, restricting the natural flow of water. In some areas, garbage build-up inside manholes reached heights of up to six feet, highlighting the severity of blockages and the urgent need for intervention. These activities form part of the Ministry’s broader efforts to strengthen drainage systems nationwide and improve resilience ahead of periods of heavy rainfall.

Improved water flow through the drainage network will help minimise the potential for roadway flooding at key locations, including the Maritime Roundabout, the intersection at the Priority Bus Route in Barataria, and the Morvant Junction. Beyond enhancing public safety and protecting infrastructure, the initiative underscores the importance of responsible waste disposal, as illegal dumping continues to increase the risk of flooding.

The Ministry is urging citizens to support these efforts by keeping drains, rivers, and waterways free of waste to help create safer, more resilient communities during the rainy season and beyond.
