As a continued measure to collectively address drainage and flooding concerns, Senator the Honourable Rohan Sinanan, Minister of Works and Transport and his executive team, met with the Honourable Adrian Leonce, Minister in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development alongside executives of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and residents of the Valsayn South area earlier today (Tuesday 1st November 2022).
At this meeting, the Ministry’s Drainage Division shared its immediate flood mitigation plan for Valsayn South and Real Springs Housing Development. This plan includes embankment works starting along the St Joseph river stretching to Bamboo #2, as well as works on the Guayabal River. The Ministry will also upgrade the gate structure that services this area.
Both parties, (the HDC and residents) were pleased with the proposed approach put forward by the Ministry of Works and Transport (MOWT) to migtigate flooding in the area. This proposed solution originated from the Ministry's Strategic Drainage Plan and will be implemented in fiscal 2023.
Subsequent to today's meeting, the MOWT in collaboration with the HDC intends to have further discussions with the wider affected community. It should be noted that the MOWT will continue to execute similar flood mitigation projects on major waterways across Trinidad.
