The Ministry of Works and Transport continues its commitment to improving national infrastructure with the widening of the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway (SSHH) from Chaguanas to Chase Village. This transformative initiative aims to alleviate traffic congestion, enhance road safety, and improve travel efficiency along one of Trinidad and Tobago’s busiest highways.
The SSHH Widening Project was executed in two phases:
Package 1: Roadway widening from Chaguanas to Chase Village
Package 2: Expansion from Brentwood Mall to the Chase Village Overpass
- Widening the northbound and southbound lanes from two to three lanes, from Bhagwansingh’s Hardware in Chaguanas to the Chase Village Overpass
- Constructing an additional deceleration lane on the northbound carriageway in Chaguanas
- Completing critical drainage infrastructure in Chaguanas
- Installing concrete barriers and guardrails along the highway from Chaguanas to Chase Village
- Constructing a retaining wall and implementing erosion control measures from Brentwood Mall to the Chase Village Overpass
- Installing jersey barriers between Brentwood Mall and the Chase Village Overpass
This highway expansion project is designed to significantly enhance the commuting experience for over 250,000 motorists. The major benefits include:
1. Traffic Congestion Relief - By increasing the number of lanes, the project will ease bottlenecks and reduce delays, particularly during peak hours. The reconfiguration of intersections and access points will create a more efficient traffic flow, minimizing disruptions for road users.
2. Reduced Travel Time - With the addition of new lanes and improved roadway capacity, motorists can expect smoother and faster commutes. Preliminary data suggests that commuters have already begun to experience an average reduction of 20 minutes in travel time along the upgraded sections of the highway.
3. Enhanced Road Safety - The implementation of slope stabilization measures, retaining walls, and drainage systems ensures the long-term integrity of the highway, reducing risks associated with erosion and flooding. Additionally, improved signage, traffic control systems, and newly installed jersey barriers will create safer driving conditions for all road users.
4. Economic and Community Impact - The project will positively impact local businesses, residents, and institutions within the vicinity of the upgraded highway. By providing better connectivity, the development supports economic activity and enhances accessibility to key commercial hubs.
