On Friday 18th November, 2016 the Minister of Works and Transport, Senator the Honourable, Rohan Sinanan launched the Freeport to Couva Parallel Access Road, and also conducted a site tour of on-going drainage and road works at Beaucarro Road, Freeport and a site tour of Mosquito Creek.
The construction of the Freeport to Couva parallel access road project, was deemed an important development towards maintaining economic development and social ties for residents of surrounding communities, as well as a critical pathway to areas adjacent to the Solomon Hochoy Highway. The Minister reiterated that this project was started under the previous administration and gave the assurance that under the stewardship of this present Government, any project started under the last administration will come to fruition once it is in the best interest of the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.
This phase of the project, which is now completed, will immediately improve the commute for persons who normally use the heavily congested Freeport Interchange to access Freeport, Christian Village, Calcutta Settlement, Indian Chain and other villages off of Calcutta Road#1. Commuters now have the privilege of bypassing the Freeport Interchange and making use of the exit ramp off the Solomon Hochoy Highway. It is also anticipated that this new exit will significantly reduce the traffic load on the Freeport Interchange, allowing for easier access to business. Citing this project as large, but outstanding, Minister reiterated the Government’s intention to bring relief to the residents. The Ministry of Works and Transport is confident that this launch is just one of the many highway and road improvement projects that are part of a holistic strategy to keep the road system of Trinidad and Tobago fluid and efficient.
In response to several complaints and concerns raised by residents of the area, Minister Sinanan also conducted a site tour of on-going drainage and road works at Beaucarro Road, Freeport. Minister Sinanan also took the opportunity to speak with some of the aggrieved residents in the area, and assured them that the road will be repaired in due course. The PURE unit of Ministry of Works and Transport (MOWT) began fixing Beaurcarro Road, approximately two years ago. Beaucarro Road is located off the Southern Main Road in Freeport, is 2.6 km long, and is one of the main arterial roads located in Freeport. This project commenced on April 17th, 2014 and has continued on a phased basis. To date, three drainage packages have been completed and one is still in progress. The road rehabilitation project commenced on 17th November, 2016 and will cover from the Southern Main Road at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C Church, to the Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall.
