Safety of Bailey Bridge at 11KM Mark of North Coast Road

Release date: 9/26/2018

The Ministry of Works and Transport (MOWT) is pleased to inform the travelling public that the installation of the Bailey Bridge along the North Coast Road, Maracas, 11KM mark was completed over the weekend and is now open to vehicular traffic.

  • The Ministry’s main priority is to keep the road open to two-way traffic at all times. As such the Bailey Bridge offers a safe, low cost and time effective solution to all road users to minimize traffic delays.

  • The Ministry of Works and Transport is pleased to have been able to assemble, install and operate the Bailey Bridge to traffic in less than 24 hours, and thanks the travelling public for their patience during the works.

  • The Ministry advises all motorists using the North Coast Road to proceed with caution and observe the posted signs indicating the speed limit and the bridge’s load limit.

Important notes:

The Steel Modular structure or Bailey bridge is part of the Mabey Compact 200 Panel Bridge System. This structure is temporary in nature and requires little maintenance. The assembled bridge can clear unsupported spans of up to 200 feet and is supported by a stable area not affected by the landslip. The bridge has an allowable road width of 3.15m and can accommodate vehicles with a maximum axle loading of 5 tons.

Speed humps were installed before and after the bridge to ensure safety at the site.

MOWT is currently monitoring the slope to prevent further erosion.

MOWT is currently engaging a geotechnical firm to carry out Geotechnical investigations and surveys. Based on the findings of the investigation a permanent solution will be developed.

It is anticipated that a contract will be awarded by December 2018 to construct a permanent solution.
