Improvement of Drainage in the Cocorite Area

Release date: 10/23/2022

The Ministry of Works and Transport’s Highways Division is currently on-site at Powder Magazine Phase 1, Cocorite clearing debris and silt on the Western Main Road following a minor landslide which occurred after heavy rains. Clean-up efforts commenced on Saturday 22nd October, 2O22 and are ongoing.

The team is executing desilting works on the underground drainage system, to clear excessive debris following the landslip. These works will increase the capacity of the drains. The Ministry is aware of five (5) areas in this vicinity that are subjected to flooding on an annual basis. The Powder Magazine area to the Community Hospital of Seventh-day Adventists formed part of a study conducted by the Ministry to inform our immediate and short term drainage plan for this area. In Phase 1 of the plan, the Ministry commenced works which included the cleaning of an inlet and outfall and replacement of a culvert on the Western Main Road, westbound in the vicinity of Massy Stores. Phase 2 of the plan is ongoing and includes the cleaning and construction of a new drain between Powder Magazine and Cocorite Terrace (Western Main Road, eastbound). In relation to the flooding issue on the Western Main Road, westbound, in the vicinity of The Falls at Westmall, the Ministry has completed design works to address this problem. This work is expected to commence in January 2023. Additionally, the Ministry has completed works between Victoria Keys and Powder Magazine to alleviate the flooding problem along the Diego Martin Highway. It is important to highlight that a component of the ongoing Diego Martin Overpass project involves the alleviation of flooding and the improvement of drainage for the area.
