By Proclamation, under the hand of Her Excellency, the President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, amendments to the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act (MVRTA), 2017 were brought into effect on May 26th 2020. This proclamation allows for the implementation of a Demerit Points System, New Traffic Ticketing System and Red Light Camera Enforcement System in Trinidad and Tobago.

In light of the preventative measures contained in the PUBLIC HEALTH (2019 NOVEL CORONAVIRUS (2019-nCoV) (NO. 5) Regulations, 2020, the Ministry of Works and Transport has taken a decision to delay the proclamation of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act No. 9 of 2017 which allows for the introduction of a Demerit Points System, new Traffic Ticketing System, and Red-Light Camera Enforcement System in Trinidad and Tobago.

Waiver of Port charges and affiliated charges relating to the importation of goods

The Ministry of Works and Transport wishes to advise all concerned that in light of the COVID-19 global pandemic which is currently impacting the international shipping industry and the restrictions imposed on the importation of non-essential goods in Trinidad and Tobago, a policy was adopted whereby the Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (PATT) and Point Lisas Port Development Corporation (PLIPDECO) will waive certain port charges as it relates to storage of goods at the Port of Spain, Scarborough and Point Lisas Ports in order to ease the burden being faced by importers of goods into Trinidad and Tobago.

MOWT Pleads with Service Providers to be Compassionate in light of Transportation Fare Hike

The Ministry of Works and Transport has noted with much concern the recent escalation of transportation fares by some service providers. During these unprecedented times, the free movement of citizens through the use of public transport remains critical to the stability of Trinidad and Tobago. As such, the Ministry is appealing to all transport providers to refrain from charging inflated prices for their service.  Please allow travellers the opportunity to get between work and home without imposing additional fares for their essential transport.

The Ministry of Works and Transport is pleased to advise the national community that due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, it is currently collaborating with the Honourable Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs to amend the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 48:50 to extend the validity of specific permits issued under the Licensing Authority.
 

MOWT Debunks Fake News of Overcrowding at Caroni Licensing Office

The Ministry of Works and Transport is deeply concerned about the circulation of inaccurate information as it relates to the congregation of large crowds at the Licensing Head Office-Frederick Settlement, Caroni. The current outbreak of COVID-19 is certainly unsettling. Paranoia is a totally normal reaction. However, the public is urged to refrain from circulating inaccurate information that can lead to unnecessary panic in the public domain.
